I can't believe I'm up-to-date (even a little ahead, dare I say) on a new product! I just so happened to be in Ulta looking for stuff to buy with my $8.00 credit from points when I saw a display for the NYX Eyebrow Gels. It was an accidental discovery, but wow it turned out great! The second I swatched a sample on my hand I knew I had to get this... keep reading for my full review!
I've always used either pencil or powder to fill in my brows. For the longest time, I've wanted to try Anastasia Beverly Hills' DipBrow, MAC Fluidline, and MUFE Aqua Brow. Each one of those are around $18-$20- not bad, but not something I want to pay.
That leads to the purchase of this, which was only $6.99! What you see above is what I use to do my brows when using the Eyebrow Gel: brow groomer, small angled brush, and a card. Since this is a liquid, the box recommended squeezing the gel onto a 'palette' and dipping the brush in there. I don't own a palette, and you don't want to squeeze it on the back of your hand because it'll dry and leave a mark! Hence my use of a Bath & Body Works coupon card!
As you can see and as I've mentioned, this comes in a tube about the same size as an OCC Lip Tar (Eyebrow Gel- .34 oz., Lip Tar- .33 oz.). You unscrew the cap and squeeze just a drop onto a card or palette and then dip a brush in to apply it to your brows.
My other thought about the packaging is that it's very sanitary. If I were a makeup artist, I'd feel confident using this for clients because the product is being squeezed out onto something else. Or I can let a friend try it and not worry about germs!
There are 5 colors you can choose from: Blonde, Chocolate, Brunette, Espresso, and Black.
I bought 'Espresso' for my dark brows.
There's not a lot on this online yet, but the few reviews I've read talked a little about the formula being runny. I don't think it's runny at all- maybe it depends on the shade, but 'Espresso' is perfect! I squeeze out just two little drops and that works for both my brows. It glides on smoothly and is incredibly easy to work with.
Wear & Tear
If you're not convinced yet on buying the gel, you will be when I tell you this. The claim on the box and tube of being 'Waterproof' and 'Smudge-proof' is completely TRUE! Right now, I'm in South Carolina in the middle of the summer. It's hot, it's humid- the deadliest combination for makeup. My face gets oily and one accidental touch to the brow usually sends my brow powder running.
I was so impressed when testing the gel. I wore it when I was out bike riding in the middle of the day, swimming, and for 12 hours one day. In all these scenarios, my brows didn't budge! While I was in the pool, I even rubbed my brows to see if they would bleed, and still nothing!
Now, you might think this must be a nightmare to take off. All I did was take a little coconut oil and rub it on my brows like I would do with eye makeup, and it came right off!
Side note: This is why I wouldn't recommend squeezing the gel onto the back of your hand, it's a hassle to have to use remover or oil each time to get the gel off! I like the card system :)
Here's a picture of my brow with the gel on it. Looking sharp, haha! I brush my brows first, then take my angled brush with the gel on it and start in the middle. I make little strokes working towards the end of my brow. When I get to the end, I flick the tail out to extend my brow. Then I take whatever's left over on the brush and just a little bit in the front part of my brow (usually just the bottom of the front).
Bottom line: I love this! I honestly can't think of any cons, only pros! If you saw this in store and decided to read about the gel before you buy it, hopefully I've convinced you to purchase. I love the finish, which gives me sharp, clean brows but not necessarily the 'painted-on' look. 'Espresso' blends with my brows seamlessly, and I can say I will 100% be repurchasing!
